I’m surprised by the negative reviews of this book. I’ve been baking cupcakes from this cookbook for the last 4 years and they’ve all turned out great! I’ve made them for multiple people, parties and birthdays. I will hopefully get to more of the recipes someday, but it’s hard not to keep going back to my favorites. It’s kind of sad but I’ve only made 4-5 of the recipes, but they’ve all been AWESOME! I like that there’s a huge variety of cupcake recipes, not your typical generic, boring recipes – such as the banana butterscotch cupcakes, which I just made for a birthday party yesterday. Everyone loved them! I haven’t made too many of the more basic cupcake recipes because there’s so many other great varieties to choose from. Recipes you wouldn’t have heard of or thought of. Normally, I look up a lot of recipes online (it’s free!) but this cookbook has so many creative varieties, I would’ve never thought to look them up.

I do agree that it would have been nice to have more photos of the different recipes, but that shouldn’t deter anyone from purchasing this cookbook. Buy this!

What a great book. This goes into a great amount of depth in the Belgian style of brewing. I made a dubbel after reading this (with things I learned from it) that is fantastic. A few things to remember about this book if you’re considering purchasing it;

1. Not for beginners; If this is your first foray into homebrewing, this book will probably not be what you’re looking for. It’s not really a step by step into how to brew Belgian beers.

2. Not a recipe book; Although it does have a few recipes, this book is not a recipe book. It revolves more around theory and techniques that can be applied to your brewing practices rather than telling you what to do.

Beyond that, it is well written and easy to read.

If you’ve made a few batches of beer and know the terminology (or some of it at least) but want to gain a little more insight and a new perspective. This is the book for you.

My first Joy of Cooking was the paperback 1976 two volume edition which I read cover to cover and used and used until it literally fell apart. I didn’t know how to cook when I bought my first Joy; I learned from its well written basic recipes (macaroni and cheese, roast turkey, chocolate cake) and good instructions. When my sisters got married I bought them their first copies of Joy; when my nieces get married I will do the same for them. It is simply the best basic cookbook available; although I also recommend Mark Bittman’s cookbooks and Alton Brown for his explanations of how and why things work the way they do in the kitchen. If I had to choose only one cookbook (and I have collected more than a hundred) this would be the one I would choose.
I know that the various editions have added some “new” recipes and techniques from other cuisines, but that doesn’t change the basic structure of the book and its value as a teaching tool.

I was just diagnosed with congestive heart failure and cannot have over 2,000 mgs of sodium per day. I spent 2 hours in the grocery store reading lables and what a shock to find out how much sodium I was ingesting in a day. I asked myself what am I going to eat? After recieving this book from Amazon I couldn’t believe all the recipes with low sodium and not just the amount of recipes but recipes that kept the taste. I plan on sticking to this way of eating because I am eating better than I have before and I am losing weight. These recipes are not rocket science, they do not take hours to prepare but are just good foods that are so much more healthier for us even if you don’t have congestive heart failure. Next time you buy groceries check your lables but don’t go into shock. When you decide to start reducing your sodium intake, check this book out. I think it is terrific and wished I had done this so much sooner.
